Today, at around 2:10 p.m., the Basic Court of Podgorica acquitted Dodë Ivanaj of the charge of “damaging the image of the Montenegrin state”. Doda was accused of having removed the Montenegrin flag from its pole on May 21 in the village of Kojë, near the monument to the “Martyrs of Kojë”, and then threw it on the ground, trampling it. Sources close to the family have confirmed that on May 21 he was not in Montenegro, but in the United States of America, emphasizing that this can be easily verified and that the arrest has political motives. Mr. Ivanaj was arrested on June 9 during his entry from Albania into the territory of Montenegro. On June 10, he was released. The Albanian American Institute strongly condemns the arrest, detention and unfair prosecution of Dodë Ivanaj. We also demand a full, transparent and independent investigation into how this arrest was made, who ordered it and on what basis this accusation was built?! The “Martyrs of Koja” monument is a sacred place for the Malësia. The men of Koja rest there who, when Malësia needed to rise up against the occupier, were ready, therefore it is not appropriate for anyone to provoke by placing symbols or other things that could bring anger to the Malësia population.
