On this September day, we commemorate the passing of Dedë Gjon Luli, a hero of Malësia e Madhe and the Albanian nation. He was a prominent figure of the Malësia region during the 19th and 20th centuries and served as the supreme leader of the Malësia Uprising of 1911. The Albanian-American Institute honors his legacy and that of the other men of Malësia who sacrificed their most precious possession—their lives—for the liberation of the homeland. Malësia, Kosovo, and Albania owe a great debt to Dedë Gjon Luli, who sacrificed everything for the national cause. His untimely death in Orosh, Mirdita, was a source of deep sorrow for the heart of Albania, yet his deeds will live on forever. Glory to Dedë Gjon Luli and all the other martyrs of Malësia e Madhe.
